DC Sweeps Waverly; WJ Boys into State Finals

Monday was a light day for Dickson area sports, but the locals got three wins out of four to brag about. The Dickson County Lady Cougars proved that the third time is a charm by besting the Waverly Tigerettes 42-40 at the Cougar Den after losses at Waverly and in the Hickman County Christmas Tournament. Only one player for Waverly was in double figures, while DCHS was led by MVP Kiwi Knox with 17 points, while Payton Grove added 14. The Dickson County boys played a tough, physical, and close contest against the Waverly Tigers, but pulled away late for a 54-42 win. JeQuan Lewis had a game-high 21 points including Dickson County’s only two three pointers, while Caleb Tuck had 10 points and two rebounds to earn MVP honors. The Cougars sealed the deal with Lewis’ 6th steal of the game in the closing seconds, as he dished to a wide open Tyler Spicer, who slam-dunked the ball with both hands for the game’s final points.

Also in action on Monday afternoon, William James Middle played on in the Class A Sectionals in Loretto. The Lady Colonels lost 37-15 to New Providence, while the boys beat Huntland 54-42. The win puts the Colonels into the Sectional Finals, the highest round sanctioned in the TMSAA–meaning that the William James boys are essentially one win away from an unofficial state title.

Charlotte opens up the Class AA Area Tournament this week, to determine seeding for the Sectional Tournament. The Lady Tigers play Tuesday night at 7:15pm, while the boys play Thursday at the same time. The Area Tournament is being held this year at Cheatham Middle.

Also on Thursday, Dickson County and Greenbrier will be in a wrestling tri-match against the homestanding Creek Wood Red Hawks. On Friday night, Creek Wood basketball travels to Harpeth, while Dickson County visits archrival Henry County. And on Saturday afternoon, the William James girls play in the consolation game of the Sectional Tournament in Loretto at 2pm, while the boys play for the title at 5:45.

Cougars Upend PC-Rutherford

Dickson County’s boys basketball team made a return trip to the Bay Barnstorm Christmas Invitational in Panama City, Florida this year, but their first game wasn’t exactly a welcome. Bay’s cross town rivals the Rutherford Rams were undefeated at 11-0, and got to face our Cougars in what amounted to a glorified home game in the first round. However, DCHS was up to the challenge and used a 16-2 fourth quarter to score a come from behind win and defeat Panama City-Rutherford 54-43. JeQuan Lewis had an unofficial 27 to lead all scorers, including five made three-pointers; DCHS had three players with 7 points each. John Wade led the Rams with 11 points in the loss.

Dickson County takes on the Hornets of Roswell, GA, Wednesday night at 4:30, followed immediately by the RFC Sports Hour presented by First Insurance Partners. Guests this week include Creek Wood boys basketball coach Charles Taylor and CW wrestling coach Tim Cherry. Also Wednesday, the DCHS Lady Cougars open the Above The Rim Christmas tournament, facing Shelbyville at Hickman County High School.

CW Red Hawk Update

The Creek Wood girls raced out to a 23-4 lead after the first quarter at Perry County and never looked back. The Lady Hawks outscored PCHS by 19 in the second half as well, to take a 61-27 win. In the boys game, Perry County won every quarter of a close contest to win 72-57. Rollie Plunkett led the Red Hawks with 16 points, while Drew Smithson added 14. Perry County had two players score over 20 points each, with one of them dropped in six 3-pointers in the rout. The Creek Wood Lady Hawks play in the Sevierville Tournament starting Wednesday morning at Oak Ridge, while the boys play Monday night in Columbia against the host Lions.

Also this week, CW wrestling hosts Sycamore Tuesday and Northeast Thursday.
