Broadcast Preview for 9-26

Dickson Middle

The Dragons will wrap up their season regular season schedule Thursday night when they host Columbia. Dickson’s season has fallen short of many preseason expectations that projected a 7-0 record for a team laden with 8th graders like Will Roberts and Jacob Murphree. After a one and three start the Dragons have been searching for answers to their inconsistencies on both sides of the ball but have rebounded to win their last two games. Thursday night is a chance to pull out a winning record for the year and finish 4-3. Tune in to the RFC Sports Network Thursday at 6pm for pregame coverage, kickoff is set for 6:30pm.

Creek Wood

The Redhawks will again be looking for their first win of the season when they travel to Stewart County Friday night. Red zone woes have plagues Creek Wood this season, the last two weeks they have entered the red zone six times and left with zero points. After two straight shutouts and 7 interceptions thrown by quarterback Ian Spence the Redhawks will try and right the ship against a one and three Rebels team that is coming off of a 28-14 loss to Houston County last week. Friday night’s game can be heard on rfcsports.com with pregame starting at 7 and kickoff set for 7:30pm.

Dickson County

After overcoming the “Homecoming Hangover” last week by beating a tough Springfield squad, the Cougars look to keep rolling on the road versus the Coyotes of West Creek. Winless on the season the Coyotes are coming off a 63-7 loss to Henry County and a win over the District leading Cougars could salvage their season. Dickson on the other hand is unbeaten at 6-0(4-0) and in control of the District 10 AAA standings. Last week’s challenge from Springfield showed that the Cougars are not invincible and still have work to do. The Yellow Jackets kept the Dickson offense out of the end zone and forced five Mitch Mersman field goal attempts to win the game. Friday’s game can be heard on the RFC Sports Network with pregame at 7 and kickoff at 7:30pm.

Heartbreaker for Dragons in Spring Hill

Dickson Middle School suffered a crushing loss Thursday night as Spring Hill rallied in the closing minutes for a 32-28 victory in a rematch of last season’s conference championship game.

The Dragons led 22-8 at halftime and led late into the fourth quarter, but the Generals controlled the second half by capitalizing on Dickson mistakes. Spring Hill opened the second half with a six-minute drive to cut the lead to six, 22-16. Dickson responded quickly with a Will Roberts screen pass to Austin Byrum that went 65 yards to push the lead to 28-16.

The fourth quarter was all Spring Hill. The Generals scored two touchdowns and both two-point conversions to take the lead for the first time with under three minutes remaining. The eventual game-winning score followed a Dragon fumble that set up Donte Smith’s 59-yard scamper. Dickson’s last shot at the win was hurt when a holding penalty erased a big gain into Generals territory and a delayed jet sweep on fourth down came up two yards short and allowed Spring Hill to run out the clock.

Conversions the Difference

Dickson was 0-for-the-season on two-point conversions coming into Thursday, but converted its first two and looked to have shaken their early season troubles. Unfortunately, they would fail on their last two attempts while Spring Hill succeeded on all four conversions to set the margin of victory.

Byrum the Victory Nissan MVP

Austin Byrum was huge for the Dragons with a one-yard touchdown run and Dickson’s only score of the second half when he took Roberts’ screen pass 65 yards for a score thanks to fantastic blocking on the outside by Jacob Murphree.

Regroup and Come Home

Dickson looks to regroup next week after going 1-2 in a three-game road trip to start the season. The Dragons come home Thursday to host Lewisburg at 6:30. The game will be live on the RFC Sports Network with coverage beginning at 6 pm.

DMS Football Season One of Ups and Downs

The Dickson Middle School Dragons entered their first season in the Big South Conference, ready to run a brand new conference gamut. It was one of unknowns and new opponents, but the Dragons managed a berth in the championship game and came up just short.

The Dragons opened the season at West Wilson, and took a tough loss 24-8…but the second half of the game the DMS Dragon defense pitched a shutout. The next three weeks, the Dragons blanked Coffman and Charlotte, and for all but the last 17 seconds, Spring Hill. In total, Dickson Middle shut out opponents for 13 straight quarters over that stretch, outscoring the opposition 56-8 over the 3-game winning streak.

Lewisburg stunned the Dragons on the road 32-20, before the Dragons rolled off three more–blanking Cox 28-0, edging Harpeth in a come-from-behind homecoming thriller 21-16, and besting Whitthorne in Columbia 8-6.

An odd scheduling snafu enabled Dickson to get a different opponent in the title game. The Dragons drew a rematch with Spring Hill in the Columbia area. While the Dragons nearly shut out the Generals earlier in the season, Spring Hill proved it is difficult to beat an opponent twice in the same season. The Generals defense tightened up, outlasting Dickson Middle 14-0 to claim the title.

While a second-place finish wasn’t what the Dragons wanted, it is a solid and respectable finish and a building block for seasons to come in the Big South Conference.
