The William James Lady Colonels used a balanced attack to upend the Waverly Junior High Lady Wildcats 21-19 on Thursday night in White Bluff. Waverly raced out to a 7-4 lead after one quarter. William James played Waverly close in the second quarter, but Waverly extended its lead to 13-9 at the halftime break. However, the Lady Colonels made some impressive halftime adjustments and blanked the Humphries County natives 8-0 for the 3rd quarter, taking the lead 17-13. In the fourth, Waverly trimmed the lead, but couldn’t erase it, as the Lady Colonel defense held on for a 21-19 home win. Faith Boie scored 10 points to lead William James, while Jordan Osborne added 6 and Stacey Spicer 5. Waverly’s Jordan Wertz led all scorers with 11 points. The win draws WJMS even at 2-2 as they await East Hickman on Tuesday. The Lady Eagles were torched earlier in the year by Charlotte, losing by 27 points at home.
The William James boys made it a sweep by crushing Waverly, 41-24, in front of a raucous home crowd. The 17 point win marks the second time this week the Colonels have won by more than 15, as the Purple and Gold handled Fairvew on Tuesday by 16. The Colonels will take their 3-1 mark to Lyles on Tuesday for a showdown with East Hickman. The Eagles lost by 10 at home against Charlotte back on October 27th.
